Visualization: How to Make Your Dreams A Reality

When it comes to getting from point A to point B, I'm a big fan of goal setting, visualization and positive thinking. How do you go from having an idea to making them a reality? Dreams don't just become a reality overnight. Sure, positive thinking helps but you also need to be persistent in your actions. stay focused on the steps necessary to get you there and stay focused on the outcome.

I've seen lots of clients achieve amazing results and see their bodies go from flab to fab. While the physical changes may come along easy, maintaining them is often the greatest challenge. What gets in the way is our image of our old self. We may pass a store window and do a double take because our brain hasn't caught up with the physical changes. It still thinks you're in your bigger pants and that's where the trouble starts. You need to align what's going on with your brain with who you want to be. If you want to be slim and strong, then you need to view yourself like such a person. If you still think of yourself as fat and out of shape then you will behave accordingly and join Ben & Jerry on the couch at night. Self sabotage at its best with a quick return to your old body - because your brain hasn't caught up.

Here is a simple exercise that has worked wonders for me and many of my clients over the years - not just with regard to your health but you can utilize this for any area in your life: your job, your relationships, your interactions with others... You only need a few minutes when you're in bed at night. Close your eyes and imagine what you want to look, feel and act like. Did you know that to your brain it doesn't matter whether it's real or imagined? Have you ever gotten ready for a date and got all excited and anxious and your face got flushed, you got hot and your heart rate rose? Just from the pure imagination? That's proof in the pudding that your thoughts alone can generate enormous power and an impact on your body. So, put it to good use on a daily basis and your goals are no longer in the future but you're living them.

Creating The Person You Want To Be

Visualize your goals as if they had already happened. Your brain doesn’t know the difference between reality and imagination and therefore it will act on what you imagine. So, imagine yourself fit and healthy and you will be much more likely to act the part: making your workouts and healthy eating much easier.

Lie or sit comfortably. Take a few deep breaths and let your chest rise. As you exhale all tension you hold in your body leaves with your breath. Inhale relaxation and exhale tension and stress. Just let it go. Feel your body melt into the ground, feel it connect to the floor and notice how a sense of calm and relaxation takes over your entire body. Draw your attention to the top of your head and imagine each and every body part the way you would like it to look and feel. Imagine yourself the way you want to look as if you have already accomplished your goals. Dare to dream and imagine…

  • What do you look like?
  • What are you wearing?
  • How do you feel about yourself?
  • How is your energy level?
  • What activities do you do?
  • How do others perceive you?
  • How are your interactions with friends?
  • Notice your level of confidence
  • How is your health?
  • What are you doing to effortlessly maintain your health and fitness?

When you’re ready, slowly open your eyes and feel refreshed and relaxed  - or drift off to sleep.
