When is gaining weight a good thing?

The September morning session of Slim & Strong ended Monday. It was a good month. People came back from their Summer vacations and more relaxed way of life (as in more booze and barbecues...) and were ready to get back to feeling and looking great.

The interesting thing this month is that the top two winners actually gained weight on the scale. However, when you look at the body fat changes, you'll see that the weight gain was caused by muscle gain (muscle weighs almost twice as much as fat) and the body fat drop translated into pure fat lost.

Take a look at our top 3 winners:
The biggest loser is MELISA!

Weight gain: 2lbs
Body fat loss: 2.6%
Muscle gained: 4.8 lbs or 5%
2.8 lbs of pure fat lost

Congrats to your $200 shopping spree at City Sports!

2nd Prize of 10 Boot Camp Sessions: Nicole K

Weight loss: 8.2 lbs
Body fat loss: 2.3%
no muscle lost
8.2 lbs lbs of pure fat lost

3rd Prize of 5 Boot Camp Sessions: Shane
Weight gain: 3.2 lbs
Body fat loss: 2.1%
5.2 lbs of muscle gained
2 lbs of pure fat lost

Congratulations ladies! Goes to show you that an increase in the scale doesn't always translate into bad news. In this case, more muscle means a leaner body and more calories burned at rest. Plus, the added muscle helps burn body fat much quicker.
